Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions or real media products?

Below is a prezi I created to answer the above question regarding my final film.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

BOTH PIECES CAN BE FOUND IN FULL ON THE PORTFOLIO PAGE OF THIS WEBSITE.

Poster

The first ancillary piece is the film poster. As mentioned before, looking at other drama posters I found that they quite often used a main focus point from the plot of story to draw audiences in. For this reason I decided to use the point in the film where Phil pours his alcohol down the sink. This is a major turning point in the film and so is an appropriate image for the poster. Although audiences who haven't viewed the film will not know what is happening and why, the alcoholic bottle entices audiences to ask questions of why this is happening and hopefully make them want to view the film.

The title of the film is short but stands out on the poster and this will help draw audiences in. Keeping the background grey and faded and the bottle in colour draws attention to the alcohol again asking where it is from and who it belongs to. This then conflicts. Usually the word Son is associated with a child and children. Audiences will wonder why alcohol may be near to children and so want to see the film.
Once they have viewed the film, the poster will change meaning completely. The alcohol being poured is actually the moment in Phil's life where everything is changing for the better and so the colour on the bottle is because this is when he becomes happy in the film. The poster then is appropriate for non viewers and viewers of the film.

The main function of the poster is to initially advertise the film. Of course it has the names of the two actors in the film and they are displayed clearly however undisturbing the main body of the poster. There is also the credit line with the legal terms and things needed on a poster. Then there is a release date, obviously informing audiences when they can view the film.
Therefore, my poster compliments my main film, it not only advertises but entices audiences to view the film. and so is an effective combination.

Magazine Article

The second ancillary piece is the magazine article.
As the purpose is to promote the product I thought carefully about what to put into the article.

I decided on an interview with the two actors as I thought allowing audiences to get to know the production team and the actors themselves would be a good publicity move for the film. The idea of using an interview was to allow audience to get to know what filming on set is like with other actors and the crew. If the audience like the people making the film they will probably be more inclined to watch it.

The three large images immediately draw audiences in, each from a key part of the film they show the two actors both alone and with each other. Showing the audience what to expect from the film it allows them to get an idea of the characters being played just from still images. There is also a small plot at the beginning of the article which will help audience understand the film. However, it doesn't give too much away and so this aids the film in drawing more potential viewings.

The layout of the article is common in magazines but is appropriate and works well with the colour scheme.
I also included on the magazine a small information bubble telling audiences to download the magazine application for "exclusive pics and gossip" by making use of new technologies such as smart phones the review expands the audience of the film and so more people are likely to hear about it. Therefore making the magazine article an effective combination with the film.

3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

To gain feedback for my film I first made use of new technology and placed it on the website YouTube to see if I could obtain any comments on there.

Unfortunately, I had no comments back and so instead I showed the film to numerous members of my family and asked them if they had any feedback.

They enjoyed the film with many saying it was great with good use of camera shots and angles. Others said the sound was nicely edited considering the windy background and that it was a nice idea of a plot. They also gave a few negatives which I have learned from.

"Why are some parts blurry"
I regret to see the amount of blurry shots in my film however this could not be helped during the editing process. I have learned that to fix this, I need to make sure the camera is not on auto-focus when filming.

"There is a lot of walking"
Watching it back there is a lot of walking in the film. I have learned that to cut more of the walking out I need to edit it with the audience more in mind than I did. How is it going to be for someone who doesn't know what is going on? That is what I need to think about when making a future project. By editing quicker to the action of the shot instead of showing all the walking I will fix this problem

"It's a bit confusing"
Written down, the plot makes perfect sense however in film it can seem a little confusing. This is because when filming we found a lot of ideas we had were hard to make and so we changed parts of the film.
From this piece of feedback I have learned the most,
  • planning is vital for the filming day, know exactly what you will be doing and when
  • when thinking of ideas for shots and locations make them realistic and somewhere you can easily accses

For any future projects I will make sure I take these into consideration

4. How did you use technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

The first technology I want to talk about is the internet. I used many websites throughout the year, all to help construct, research, plan and evaluate my project. Of course I used Google to search for images and websites etc.

The first website I want to talk about is Weebly itself. It is where all my work is kept and allows me to edit my blog, adding images, videos and anything to do with my Media lessons.

The second website is Freesound.org. This is where I found the audio background for my film and the television noise. It is a free, non copyright sound file website open to anyone.

I also used YouTube. I uploaded my final film to my account to see if I could receive any comments to use as feedback for evaluation.

I also used the emailing website Outlook.

I created an account using my chosen production team name JK Productions.

I then used this account to stay in contact with Mark Grady, our chosen actor for the film. We arranged the meeting time and ideas for the film on here and so was an important aspect of planning.

All of this and everything else produced was done on an Apple Mac Pro in my school.

To film and take location shots for my project I used the camera shown here.
Sony Alpha 3000

It has various setting that can be used to alter the image and video quality prefilming.

I also used a programme on the Mac called Photoshop which is an editing piece of software.

I used it to create both my poster and magazine article (as seen here)
It is a handy programme with many options allowing you to colour, crop and many more options to images and text.

And to edit my final film I used another piece of software on the Mac called Final Edit Pro.

It allows you to cut, stick and fine tune the transitions between shots. It also allows you to add extra audio tracks and edit them into your film.

I then exported the final film using real time player which I then posted on the portfolio page of this website.
